Book List 2006

It’s interesting looking back over the books from last year at just how many I do tend to return to over and over again as loved favourites, let’s see just how many of these find their way back into reading hands again this year.

New for the list I’ll be adding an * to any book that is a re-read.

The 2006 List

1. V for Vendetta – Alan Moore and David Lloyd starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
Can’t wait to see what they make out of it as a movie.

2. The Da Vinci Code* – Dan Brown starsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
Following the book to movie theme, I was given this as a Christmas present so decided to give it a re-read. My thoughts this time are exactly the same as the first, not so great a book but it’ll make a fun popcorn film.

3. American Gods – Neil Gaiman starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif

4. Vernon God Little – DBC Pierre starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
I felt so much frustration on behalf of the protagonist, which is exactly the point. People are idiots.

5. Kabuki: Scarab – David Mack starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
Not as good as Metamorphosis, but still incredibly absorbing.

6. Obsidian Butterfly* – Laurell K Hamilton starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
I’m on an Anita kick again…more to come.

7. Faranheit 451 – Ray Bradbury starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
I can’t believe it took me so long to get around to reading this book. Slap, slappity slap.

8. The Te of Piglet – Benjamin Hoff starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif

9. The Princess Bride – William Goldman starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
Twice as good as the movie. Read it for Inigo and Fezzik, read it for Buttercup’s Baby.

10. Weight – Jeanette Winterson starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
Raw myth of substance, life, and nothing. Beautiful.

11. The Weavers of Saramyr – Chris Wooding starsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
Fairly standard fantasy novel. I say fairly standard, but I couldn’t stop reading until it was finished, there was something about those masks.

12. Incubus Dreams* – Laurell k. Hamilton starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
I still want a little less of the lust and a bit more mystery and battle.

13. Beauty – Sheri S. Tepper starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
As with many Tepper novels it started great but didn’t finish quite to my satisfaction.

14. Russian Fairy Tales – Aleksandr Afanas`Ev starsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
Wow, those Russians can be such a pessimistic, opportunist and vengeful mob. Beware.

15. Song of Kali – Dan Simmons starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
A good book always leave me pondering its message for a good time afterwards.

16. Ordeal by Poison* – J.H.Brennan starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
A childhood favourite. Shiva goes through an ancient rite to earn the position of Crone(shaman) in her Clan.

17. The Skein of Lament – Chris Wooding starsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
The second Saramyr novel, a bit too heavy on the cultural explanations and environment preachings, yet enjoyable enough.

18. Micah – Laurell K Hamilton starsmall.gif
A very quick read with the over-enthusiastic sex scenes that have become so common in the series and once again very little actual story. This is a filler, nothing more.

19. The Book of Laughter and Forgetting – Milan Kundera starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
Chocolate cookies and warm milk create a similar pleasure to that of Kundera’s writing. Bohemia brought beautifully out of memories.

20. The Silver Wolf* – Alica Borchardt starsmall.gifstarsmall.gifstarsmall.gif
A well read favourite this one. Visit 8th century Rome with a few shaggy friends.
